Comprehensive Analysis of the Structure and Advantages of MPO Fiber Jumper

MPO jumper is composed of MPO connector and optical cable, where MPO connector is a high-density multi-fiber connector that uses precision molding in MT pins and is applied in high-density fields. The fiber types are usually OM3 multimode fiber or OM4 multimode fiber.

Description of MPO patch cord

Compared with other connectors, the main feature of MPO connector is its compact design and multiple core jumper. The MPO connector has the same size as the SC connector, but can accommodate 12 or 24 fibers. Therefore, MPO can greatly save cabinet wiring space.

Common MPO jumper are 8, 12, and 24 cores, with a maximum requirement of 144 cores. For 40G MPO fiber jumper, 8 and 12 core MPO multimode connectors are generally used; for 100G MPO fiber jumper, 24 core MPO connectors are generally used.

Structure of MPO patch cord

MPO patch cord includes fiber, sheath, coupling components, metal ring, pins, dust caps, etc. And the pin part is divided into male and female types. The male connector head has two PIN pins, while the female connector head does not. The connection between MPO connectors is precisely aligned through PIN pins.

When docking connectors, the spring mounted at the end of the plug-in pin will provide a thrust to lock it with the adapter. The connector body has a "key" on one side, which is divided into "concave and convex", used to limit the relative position of the connector head, such as P1, P2, etc. There is a mark called "white dot" on the main body of the connector to specify the insertion side of the connector.

Generally, a fiber optic link requires two fibers to complete the entire transmission process, and polarity is the interconnection matching between the sending end (Tx) and the receiving end (Rx) of the fiber optic link. In ordinary wiring systems, commonly used connectors such as LC/SC can easily match, so there is no polarity issue. However, for pre-connector and high-density wiring systems, such as MPO connection systems, polarity issues must be highly valued.

Advantages of MPO patch cord

  • Provide 8 to 144 fiber connections;

  • Use 4, 8, 12, 24 core MPO connectors to minimize faults and reduce wiring space;

  • Smoothly upgrade from 10G to 40G, 100G network transmission, and support the time delay index of 100G transmission;

  • Multiple fiber specifications can be selected according to user configuration requirements, such as multimode OM3, OM4 and single mode G652D, G657A2;

  • Using a new type of optical cable with a circular and small outer diameter structure, a smaller bending radius of the main trunk cable is achieved, making storage and laying more convenient and fast;

  • Using protective sleeves at both ends that are dustproof, compression-resistant, and pull-resistant, the optical cable and fiber connector can be effectively protected from damage during transportation and installation.

The growth of bandwidth demands is endless, and it also promotes the development of fiber optic wiring infrastructure. More and more MPO backbone cables are being used.
